ROAD TRIP WEEKEND GETAWAY: WHITBY & EDINBURGH

01:14:00

It has been quite a while since I went out on a holiday (ever since Granada in January) and I was getting so bored of staying in Sheffield during the many many weekends in between - mind you, Sheffield is a very small town, so there isn't much of anything new to discover anymore. I thought I had to get out on a short getaway and rejuvenate from all the thesis writing, so we immediately booked an apartment in Edinburgh and rented a 9 seater minivan.

There were 6 of us in total (3 couples) and the van was spacious (thank God! it was a 5 hours drive from Sheffield!). We departed around noon and had a short detour to Whitby, a small seaside town in North Yorkshire.

With that kinda weather, it was the perfect time to visit a seaside / fisherman's town. It was beautiful! With the sound of seagulls enhancing our seaside mood, and ice cream shops everywhere. We had a leisurely stroll and had fresh fish and chips for lunch at a local shop. We didn't stay for too long as we had to head back out on our journey, so here's some photos of beautiful Whitby...

We then continued for another 4-hours drive into Edinburgh and arrived pretty late that evening and just checked into our Airbnb, which was just 10 minutes from the city centre.

We started off early the next day as we only had 1 full day in Edinburgh. Unfortunately, the weather wasn't all that pretty with its summer blue sky (considering we were having a major heat wave for the past week in Sheffield!). Since we only had 1 and a half days in Edinburgh, we spent the days walking along the high street, and then up to Edinburgh Castle, went into some quirky shops, and obviously into some cool Harry Potter shops, since it is the 'birth place' of Harry Potter.

I'll just let the photos do the story-telling here :)

Random strolling around beautiful old neighbourhood.

The Elephant House - where JK Rowling wrote the Harry Potter book series.

Of course we had some Scottish shortbread. So delish!

On our second day, it was a beautiful sunny day. The perfect day to stroll around the city. There were even weekend markets that we got to enjoy!

Bought some takoyaki.
I've always missed a good takoyaki while living in Sheffield, and these tasted just perfect!

Loving this summer view!

Victoria Street in the Old Town is a must go if you are in Edinburgh. It's so beautiful with its colourful building shopfronts along a curved street. It's also full of quirky souvenir shops and a perfect place to go Harry Potter merchandise shopping if you're a Potterhead!

Fiz-ione Granger?

And then onto Castlehill en-route Edinburgh castle.

Voila! The mandatory group photo for the memory of this trip.

Honestly, I really think Edinburgh is a beautiful city; full of history, amazing architecture, culture and beautiful scenic landscape, and it's really worth a visit. It was a really fun weekend, but too short of a stay.  We really didn't do it much justice of only visiting for less than 2 full days - therefore didn't have enough time to cover most of Edinburgh. Although this was my second time in Edinburgh, I still feel like there's a lot more to explore. Hopefully in the future :)
